The idea for A Book of Small Things began with my desire to work with writers and visual artists with different backgrounds. I approached the publication from my own aesthetic point of view while also taking on the callings of a performing publisher for the first time. It was important to me that this book collection in pocket size be easily accessed, carried around lightly, offered to others comfortably, found when left in a pocket, handled also as a notebook or sketchbook inviting writerly readers to doodle, scribble, and write their own text.
In the past, I have used personal, social and political incidents, behaviors, statements, etc., as material to produce art. In this process, my work has created new “realities” and dreamy environments full of brand new promises or assumptions open to alternative observations, approaches, and new ways of communicating. In the art project, A Book of Small Things,I invited writers to contribute to this publication by offering material that they have collected, pieces that have appeared elsewhere independently, and ones written for the first time. I welcomed fragments, seemingly “incomplete” lines, notes on art or from a lecture, scribbles, neglected texts, and social commentary. Each contributing writer’s work appears in an individual book adjoining the other writers’ books.
To present this book collection, I invite performers to walk, in live action, through art museums and/or art centers, reading fragments of their own choice to visitors, artworks, guards, etc.
